We’re beginning our Lenten journey in a very unique way, Mission Style .
Currently, the sun is moving through the sky as we move toward the Spring Equinox.
On March 8, 2025, at 6:25 am, sunrise at Mission San Miguel, the sunlight shone
through the window of the mission facade to illuminate the retablo, the statue of St
Francis and then moved into the sanctuary to illuminate the cross and then the altar.
The recorded time lapse video below shows the event.
The video is accompanied by original mission music composed by Franciscan FriarFr. Narciso Duran, president of the California Missions in 1824, who performed and
wrote music for the missions engaging the native and local young to play music for
Mass and community festivals.
A similar illumination will occur on the Fall equinox, on the feast of Saint Francis, when
the celestial star, the Sun, after completing first half circle across the horizon, will again
shine through the Mission San Miguel façade window to illuminate the saint and then
the sanctuary and tabernacle.
The intricate skill, knowledge of the celestial pathways and the creativity of the
Franciscan monks and the native builders in crafting and executing the precise
architectural expression to align the nave, to position the mission window at the
appropriate height and to stage the retablo and statuary, combined to create the precise
illumination of the sanctuary, a visual phenomenon still experienced today, 200 years
later.
May this Lenten season be a time that draws us closer to Our Lord through
contemplation of his great sacrifice for us and the gift of the institution of the Eucharist.
May it also be a time to reflect and appreciate the work of past generations who
Incorporated nature creativity and the art that we still enjoy here, today, in the unique
and sacred venue that is the Mission San Miguel where we join with the communion of
angels and saints, with Brother Sun and all of creation, in a canticle of praise to God
that continues from age to age.
